Common Fire Extinguisher Violations in Commercial Properties

Fire extinguishers are one of the simplest — and most frequently cited — fire safety deficiencies in commercial buildings.

Here are the violations inspectors see most often.

Missing or Inaccessible Extinguishers

Extinguishers must be:

  • Installed in required locations
  • Clearly visible
  • Unobstructed

Blocked or missing extinguishers are an instant red flag.

Expired or Missing Inspection Tags

Commercial extinguishers require:

  • Monthly visual checks
  • Annual certified inspections

Missing, outdated, or incomplete tags are among the top inspection failures.

Incorrect Extinguisher Type

Using the wrong extinguisher for the hazard (e.g., no Class K extinguisher in a commercial kitchen) can lead to violations and increased risk.

Improper Mounting Height

Extinguishers must be mounted at the correct height per code.
Too high, too low, or placed on the floor = non-compliance.

Damaged or Low-Pressure Units

Cracked hoses, broken seals, corrosion, or low-pressure gauges all mean the extinguisher may fail when needed at most.

Extinguishers are often the first line of defense during a fire.
If they don’t work — or aren’t accessible — small incidents can escalate quickly.

Regular inspections eliminate these violations before they become problems. Reach-out to Harex Inc. To help with your fire extinguisher inspection.
